Maa Agameswari was founded in the late 16th century or early 17th century by the legendary scholar of Tantra, Sarvananda Agambagish. He was the contemporary of the great sage, Ramprasad Sen, and is said to have codified the devotion of the peculiar form of Goddess Kali known as Agameswari in Santipur. It is said in the tradition of the locality, “the peculiar form of ritualistic devotion and the tradition of the gigantic idol of Agameswari has remained uninterrupted for the past 400 years, and it is perhaps the oldest uninterrupted tradition of Tantra in the Nadia district.”
